OPENING OF FITNESS CENTER LAUNCHES INDEPENDENT LIVING’S
WELLNESS PROGRAM
A fresh commitment to positive living begins at The Cottages this
month with the opening of a brand-new Fitness Center. Located
on the lower floor of independent living’s Westbrooke Clubhouse,
the center will practice a philosophy of holistic wellness, building
upon Brooke Grove Retirement Village’s (BGRV) unique legacy
of wholesome, compassionate care.
So, what is wellness, and why is it important? In recent years,
many continuing care retirement communities have expanded their
approach to resident care giving. Health and well-being, as described
by “The American Journal of Health Promotion,” depends
not merely on physical, but also emotional, social, spiritual
and intellectual fulfillment.

Truly innovative healthcare, therefore, must emphasize wellness:
a new, multifaceted view of health, incorporating all aspects
of human well-being.
Wellness, seen in this light, emerges not as a facility, an exercise
or a passing feeling, but as a state of mind and being achieved
through “whole-person” involvement in a variety of
positive and stimulating activities. As the ideological backbone
behind the new Fitness Center, this over-arching program of wellness
influences every step of its development.
Starting this month, the Fitness Center will open its doors and
put state-of-the art, senior-friendly exercise equipment, a variety
of wellness-oriented programming and skilled personnel at the
disposal of the independent living community. According to Wellness
Director Laura Rounds, residents wishing to use the facility will
first take a personal fitness assessment and receive a customized
wellness regimen based on their personal needs. Terrie Daniels,
a certified fitness consultant and trainer specializing in senior
fitness, will be available to assist with assessments, training
and education.
Along with more traditional resistance, cardio and core/stability
training, the Fitness Center plans to offer Yoga and Tai Chi classes,
guest speakers, health screenings and educational health classes.
The opening of the Fitness Center signals a new chapter in BGRV’s
long-standing tradition of creative and compassionate care. A
fresh perspective on healthcare and aging is crucial to the implementation
of this new “whole person” philosophy. The mentality
of wellness celebrates independence and optimism — with
an emphasis on asking “What do you love in life?”
rather than “What health problems do you have?” This
paradigm shift allows participants the privilege of embracing
wellness, and in the same instant, redefines personal health as
the by-product of an active, responsible and fulfilled life.
