Alzheimer's Support Group Provides Vital Link
July 12, 2006
Brooke Grove Retirement Village’s (BGRV) Alzheimer’s Support Group is a caring support network for caregivers of loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease. By talking openly with others who share their experiences and concerns, group members find guidance, encouragement and friendship.
Sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association, National Capital
Area, the group meets on the third Wednesday of each month from 10-11 a.m. at Brooke Grove Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on the BGRV campus. BGRV Chaplain Bill Neely and Independent Living Wellness Coordinator Laura Rounds are the group’s Alzheimer’s Association-trained facilitators.
Alzheimer’s is a progressive, degenerative disease that attacks the brain’s nerve cells, resulting in loss of memory and cognitive ability as well as behavioral changes. Statistics show that seven in 10 people with Alzheimer’s disease live at home, with family and friends providing almost 75 percent of home care. The demands of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s are so difficult that the health and longevity of the caregiver often decrease as well. Support programs can relieve some of that stress.
